Do you remember the first time you had to hold your phone at arm’s length to read a text message? Or how about the first time you found yourself squinting at a restaurant menu? Unfortunately, presbyopia — an age-related condition that affects the eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects — comes for us all in time. But we have good news! This summer, the FDA approved VizzTM eye drops for the treatment of presbyopia. These easy-to-use eye drops are revolutionizing how we tackle this age-old, age-related vision challenge. Should you ask your eye doctor about Vizz eye drops?
What Is Presbyopia?
Before we go any further, let’s quickly review what presbyopia is and how it works.
As we age, the natural lenses in our eyes become less elastic and flexible. This makes it difficult for the lenses to change shape and properly focus light on the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It typically starts creeping up on us around age 40. Although the most common symptom is struggling to focus on close-up objects, you might also experience blurred vision, eye strain, or headaches when reading or performing close work.
The most common treatment for presbyopia is a basic pair of reading glasses — affordable, but a hassle to carry around. Other people use bifocal eyeglasses or multifocal contact lenses. But there’s a new treatment on the block . . .
Say Hello to Vizz Eye Drops
On July 31, 2025, the FDA approved Vizz eye drops by LENZ Therapeutics for the treatment of presbyopia in adults. The generic name is aceclidine ophthalmic solution 1.44%. How do these eye drops work?
Vizz eye drops are the first and only aceclidine-based eye drops for presbyopia. Aceclidine is a cholinergic muscarinic receptor agonist, which means it stimulates certain receptors in the eye. It acts as a miotic, primarily on the iris sphincter muscle, causing the pupil to constrict. This leads to a “pinhole effect” that increases your depth of focus, letting you read or see nearby things more clearly without significantly changing your distance vision. Plus, because it minimally stimulates the ciliary muscle, it aims to avoid causing eye strain or the “accommodative spasms” associated with focusing.
During clinical trials, Vizz was well-tolerated by patients. Over the trials’ 30,000 treatment days, no serious treatment-related adverse events were observed. The most common side effects were irritation, dim vision, and headaches, most of which were considered mild in severity.
The eye drops are inserted once daily. You add one drop to each eye, wait two minutes, and then add a second drop to each eye using the same single-dose vial. After that, you can expect to see your near vision improve within about 30 minutes. The effects last up to 10 hours, perfect for all-day wear.
